Cutting GatorStitch steel tubing to most any length or angle can be
achieved using a standard table-mounted chop or miter saw fitted with a high quality
abrasive cut off blade as seen below. However, through rigorous testing, it has been determined that
a quicker, cleaner, and more consistent cut can be achieved with the use of a
cold saw.
- If choosing the miter saw/abrasive cut-off wheel option,
one must be aware of the fact that many table-mounted miter saws run at high RPMs. These
higher RPM models tend to develop higher heat build up in the cutting wheels resulting in
either loss of wheel integrity or inadvertent softening and/or melting of the inner
aluminum stapling web of the GatorStitch tube.
So try to locate a saw model that runs at a slower RPM along with cut-off wheels that are
rated to withstand equal or higher RPMs than the saw runs at.
You also need to be aware of the fact that cutting 18-gauge steel tubing, such as
GatorStitch, can take up to twice as long with a standard miter saw as
with the recommended cold saw.
Additionally, a cold saw will almost always result in a cleaner cut, typically completely
eliminating the need for time-consuming grinding and de-burring, as is inevitably required
following cuts on steel tubing with a common chop or miter saw.
